5 dairy-free super smoothies to drink this week

Juices are all that. Like the new girl who starts in sixth form and suddenly all. the. boys.

Well move over newbie… The smoothie is back. (At least, it is in my house). I've been rediscovering this breakfast treat thanks to the shiny new blender I got for Christmas, which I love a bit too much.

I'm currently cutting down on dairy so I've been trying out combinations with coconut water instead of milk, though you can use actual water if you want. I'm also throwing in more veg than fruit because sugar's such a drama queen.

Turns out smoothies are a quick, easy breakfast and a great way to take on a shit ton of nutrients at the start of the day. You're welcome, body!

Here are my five current favourites.

TO MAKE THEM: Chuck the required fruit / veg / spices / honey in your blender, add around 200ml of coconut water and whizz it up 'til smooth. Simps!

1. Avocado, kale and blueberry smoothie
Handful of blueberries
Handful of kale, stalks removed
1/2 avocado
Coconut water

Tip: Drink this straight away. Blueberries contain natural pectin so leave it too long and it'll turn into frogspawn / jelly. No one wants to eat their smoothie with a spoon, yo.

2. Drink your greens smoothie
1 apple, grated
Kiwi, peeled and sliced
Handful of spinach
Coconut water

This fruity little number's a good one if you're new to veg smoothies. Try chucking in some peeled, cubed cucumber too if you have some.

3. Cacao, kale and maca smoothie
1 ripe banana
Handful of kale, stalks removed
2 tbsp cacao powder or cacao nibs
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp maca powder
Coconut water

I got the idea for this from Hemsley + Hemsley. Those utter babes call it their workout recovery smoothie and add peanut butter, which I don't like, and flaxseed, which I don't own. I make this after a run... it's delicious and energising.

4. Avocado and kiwi smoothie
1/2 avocado
2 kiwis, peeled and sliced
Handful of kale, stalks removed
Coconut water
Honey, a splodge

5. Banana and spinach smoothie
1 ripe banana
Large handful spinach
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Coconut water

This is a good one for the end of the week when you're running low on ingredients.

Happy blending, gang!
